Banyak orang lupa dan kena sekem sama jargon marketing perusahaan sekemer internasional. Upgrade to Vista. Leopard pre-installed disetiap mac baru. Satu yang mereka (kita) lupa bahwa OS adalah “services” yang seharusnya “transparent”. Tidak membebani komputer yang anda pergunakan (CPU tax). Mau liat mengapa Vista sux?

Gambar diatas adalah gambaran resource laptop PC saya, good old IBM ThinkPad T41 (Centrino 1.6GHz) yang sudah diupgrade RAM nya jadi 2GB dan dapet lungsuran HDD 160GB (IDE bo’ makyus). Dengan 2GB RAM, Vista sudah memperkosa RAM (dan resources) laptop saya sebesar 1,320GB! dan hanya menyisakan 211MB of free memory untuk applications. Halah. Dengan harga memory laptop DDR1 yang masih selangit, dan sisa memory 211MB mau dipake untuk apa tuh laptop?

Bandingkan dengan Windows XP SP2 berikut di laptop yang sama:

Windows XP SP2 memakan hanya 170MB RAM dari 2GB RAM yang ada, menyisakan 1,722MB free memory untuk aplikasi yang ada.

What’s the point in here. We need a lean mean software. Even better a lean mean OS that consume less memory and more performance, so it doesn’t push you to upgrade your hardware and applications each time you want to try a new OS. I missed BeOS a big time. Evenworse, the desktop OS world now consumed by this two vendors, Microsoft and Apple. Linux is not ready yet for desktop. Not much big and business applications available in this platform. Unless you’re a geek, your mom and your grand ma won’t use linux. Or unless they will use it for specific uses (internet, writing and stuffs). Too much to compromise.

In the case of Leopard, Leopard also a memory hog compare to Tiger. It’s installed on every new Macs (and you can’t revert it to Tiger). Thanks God every Macs can accomodate 4GB memory or more (Mac Pro) with the exception of MacBook Air. Leopard even more a more bloatware system is still perform better than Vista in general.

My suggestion:

1. If your machine is a year old laptop (or before Santa Rosa chip) and can not accomodate more than 2GB RAM (if it can, then upgrading the memory to 4GB is a good investment) -> don’t dream to upgrade to Vista or Leopard. It won’t worth the new excitement of having the new OS.

2. If you have desktop and can accommodate big memory, 2GB or 4GB memory is a good investment, whether you’re going to use Vista or XP.

3. If you buy a Mac, a 1GB RAM installed on every new MacBook with Leopard is a joke. You want a full 4GB to run Leopard and Parallels Desktop (most today’s switcher a PC guys who still need Windows in their Parallels Desktop). BootCamp is not my preferrable.

4. If you buy a MacBook Pro, then the forthcoming Penryn (45nm) MacBook Pro with full 4GB of RAM maybe safe your day.

5. If you pass over these two vendors engineer (or even better the executives), slam them in their face… and shout “What the hell are you thinking?” You’re just put the world into a Jurassic age!
