Xserve G5 is awesome, but for price-conscious person, I prefer HP Proliant DL145 (Opteron 242 1.6 GHz) with FreeBSD/amd64 5.4-STABLE. Yes, no Aqua, no simple management platform, only raw power 🙂

😀 it is awesome. But actually Xserve comes also with price concious budget person model. Called Cluster Node model…. or choose single processor model.

Yes, I compare DL145 with Single Processor model, and hey, I can buy two DL145 for the price of one Xserve G5 Single processor model. I wonder, why Apple seems to discontinue Xserve G4 ? For regular computer network application (mail/directory service/dns/router/web) server, I think G4 is sufficient, and Apple could sell it for cheaper price 🙂
