One of the beautiful things about having a fast system is to have a REALLY FAST operating system that not slows your system down. FreeBSD‘s vision is always to have a really fast and performance system out the market. For free!

With the recent release FreeBSD 7.0 once again the FreeBSD team manage to release a really powerful system out the market as schedule. It won’t slow your system down. Things you can’t find in commercial OSes.

I should say, let’s thank the team and kudos to all of you. Let’s hope that the project will be alive for years to come and more philanthropists donate the project so the developers will have a decent reward on what they’re done over the years.

And if only, Apple would produce a more decent Mac OS X Server with that kind of tuning. Apple, are you hearing us?

Recent gaim library changes to libpurple cause some applications that use its engine to rely on it’s operation like Pidgin (used to named Gaim) and Adium (for Mac) have a small but decent bugs, it can not support bunch contact list.

I used to use gaim (on Linux) and regularly use Adium on Mac seen the problem since Adium 1.1.x therefore stick to older Adium 1.0.6. Is it just me or anyone has the same problem? I have hundreds contacts list which can’t show (depleted) on Adium 1.1.x or newer version, but Adium 1.0.6 can show it properly (A to Z). Same thing with Gaim.

Can anyone confirm the problem? Or maybe none of the developers have long contact list? Help is highly appreciated.

Salah satu problem bagi mobile warrior dengan keberadaan superslim supersexy laptop MacBook Air adalah kapasitas HDD nya yang jauh dari memadai buat ukuran geeks. Karena ukuran hard disknya yang kecil (1.8″) relatif dibandingkan dengan kebanyakan hard disk laptop yang 2.5″ dan hanya 80GB (bandingkan dg custom MacBook/MacBook Pro saya yang 250GB) maka penasaran juga ingin mengganti internal HDD MacBook Air dengan HDD iPod 160GB. So here I am kanibalin iPod 160GB baru untuk dibongkar HDD nya.

Sebelnya iPod generasi baru makin sulit dibongkar karena sudut iPod dikasih “bibir”. Bongkaran ini makan korban puluhan obeng plastik batere iPod. Secara juragan batere, maka obeng kita ada cuma rusak sekian banyak bete juga (obeng plastik batere iPod dirancang sekali pake rusak agar ga merusak permukaan iPod).

Hard Disk yang dipergunakan di MacBook Air ternyata berukuran sangat tipis hanya 5mm thick, dan memiliki 8MB Cache dan 4200RPM. Sedangkan Hard Disk yang dipergunakan di iPod memiliki ketebalan 8mm dan 2MB Cache dan 3600RPM? Tadinya kepikiran sih masih bisa squeeze 3mm karena hard disk MacBook Air ada karet dan busa buat suspensionnya.

Setelah bongkar-membongkar memakan korban puluhan obeng plastik iPod dan 1 iPod Classics 160GB, ternyata interface PATA di iPod berbeda dengan yang dipergunakan di MacBook Air 😛 Sekemmmm…

So the conclusion is: NO GO! Hopefully this will answer many ambiguity over the net wether we can replace the MacBook Air’s hard disk with iPod’s 160GB.

Update: Setelah gagal masang hard disk akhirnya gua pasang keyboard putih di MacBook Air jadi MacBook Cai (Air) Bodas (White) Edition wakakaka… dengan Kang Jay sebagai model batere dan abuser iPod 😛 *ngacirrrr

Apple did it once. A PowerBook 2400c which is a “make over” (with the help of IBM’s team) bulky but sturdy ThinkPad 535. Ultra light portable has been a “niche” product compares to consumer product like MacBook. MacBook Air will sell whole lot less compares to original MacBook. MacBook Air biggest strength is its WOW factor pretty much like the ThinkPad “butterfly” 701c. But let’s face it, the upcoming ThinkPad X300 has it all. It a completely a mobile warrior machine for people on the move sans the elegant of MacBook Air (Yeah of course it’s a never ending debate whether the black is beautiful. But after the 16 years since its debuts ThinkPad Black Only Policy is getting me bored all the way. Same as the 4 years of constant aluminium style of MacBook/PowerBook design. It’s bored to death).

Here’s the original ThinkPad 535 which boast 10.4″ TFT screen and serve in Japanese market:

And then it transformed to this beautiful PowerBook 2400c, the only machine that refuse to die. People are constantly upgrade this machine to 400MHz using third party solution (compares to its original 180MHz and 240MHz)

And the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad X300 is a really kick ass machine. It has everything that a Macbook Air lacks, a 3.5G built-in card, 3 USB slots, Express Card and a stunning 7mm thin and light DVD burner.

All Apple needs is to wrap it around aluminium clads, put some nice Apple shining logo on the back of cover and put it Mac OS X instead of pity Vista. And called it the day.
