Apple did it once. A PowerBook 2400c which is a “make over” (with the help of IBM’s team) bulky but sturdy ThinkPad 535. Ultra light portable has been a “niche” product compares to consumer product like MacBook. MacBook Air will sell whole lot less compares to original MacBook. MacBook Air biggest strength is its WOW factor pretty much like the ThinkPad “butterfly” 701c. But let’s face it, the upcoming ThinkPad X300 has it all. It a completely a mobile warrior machine for people on the move sans the elegant of MacBook Air (Yeah of course it’s a never ending debate whether the black is beautiful. But after the 16 years since its debuts ThinkPad Black Only Policy is getting me bored all the way. Same as the 4 years of constant aluminium style of MacBook/PowerBook design. It’s bored to death).
Here’s the original ThinkPad 535 which boast 10.4″ TFT screen and serve in Japanese market:
And then it transformed to this beautiful PowerBook 2400c, the only machine that refuse to die. People are constantly upgrade this machine to 400MHz using third party solution (compares to its original 180MHz and 240MHz)
And the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad X300 is a really kick ass machine. It has everything that a Macbook Air lacks, a 3.5G built-in card, 3 USB slots, Express Card and a stunning 7mm thin and light DVD burner.
All Apple needs is to wrap it around aluminium clads, put some nice Apple shining logo on the back of cover and put it Mac OS X instead of pity Vista. And called it the day.

Kenapa ga diganti ya tampilannya.. bosen berat.. Probably would sell cheaper if they provide HDD alternative instead of SSD only, and would sell better.. maybe 😛

=> Yup. It’s for a guy who usually depends on high capacity 250GB on the road like me to switch to 64GB Solid State Disk 🙁 … lots to compromise 🙁

I would definitely go with this one instead of macbook air… The only thing is it just doesn’t come with OSX (sure we can install hackintosh but still it’s more convenient if it came bundled)

Apple today master the “art” of crafting up a truly thin, beautiful, amazing, wonderful, easy to use computer. Once they also master the “idea” of making these all appear and packaged in COMPACT – SMALL form factor, then the whole Apple computing gear package would be wonderful. Small-form -factor Apple computing device would probably create the next great waves, that makes people and everybody in the market have “another” really great reason for loving and adoring Apple like “crazy”. Ya mohon maaf ya, memang Thinkpad X300 itu supermegamaknyusss…. mesin impian orang2 kayak gw…isi ram 4GB, terbang deh… kalau MBA mah cuma menang gaya doang, tenaganya lemah, gak punya raw power…

You’re truly living in a dream world. If you mean that MacBook Air is underpowered is definitely a false acquisition. What I meant for ThinkPad X300 solidness its build in DVD Drive and extra ports. And don’t forget it’s heafty 2,500-2,700 USD price tag compare to 1,799 for MacBook Air.

=> True Vino, Apple is pretty much like Harley Davidson where the users are become free evangelist for the company. And now it’s all up to Apple to maintain the momentum.

#12 + #14: Setuju dengan Affan. Cape gw ngeliat orang bilang “tapi kan kan X300 jauh lebih mahal dibanding MBA!”, padahal kalau 2-2nya pake SSD, X300 malah lebih murah $200 (but, ini kan belom harga final juga).
Cuma 1 aja yg mengganjal (selain harga), processornya itu lho yg ULV. Kayaknya emang cuma pengguna kantoran yg browsing+email+presentasi+ngetik doang.
