Apple – Intel Alliance? What’s Next?

Uncategorized Add comments

Steve Jobs’ WWDC Keynote stated than future PowerPC would not meet the higher perfomance per watt Intel processor… hmm interesting. Why? Since today’s Pentium is way hotter than PowerPC G5. By having said that I can confirm myself that Apple would embrace the Desktrino (Desktop Centrino) and mostlike the dual core desktrino product from Intel.

Or by 2007 all Intel product already move to the Pentium 5? Desktrino??? Let’s check out Intel roadmap for sure. Put your comment below and let has some discussion. The biggest question still is, Will Apple eventually open its OS X to PC manufacturers???

    What’s next?

On WWDC 2006, Steve Jobs on stage. Reach to his neck and pull out some kind of rubber mask (picture Ethan Hunt pulling his mask in Mission Impossible), and reveal that beneath the latex mask, is the one and only, Bill Gates.

Aparently, Steve Jobs never exist. Bill Gates is the “Dark Half” (ala Stephen King) of the person, and that day, the darkside wins.

From another point of view (apart from the system and things that I really have no knowledge about) Apple has become a cult brand from its ‘exceptionality’ and for me (and a lot of people in my peers), Apple is the symbol of attitude, it feels like wearing Levis and Adidas meanwhile Intel felt too common, another me-too sejuta umat product.

And perhaps Levis-Tira alliance is not such a good idea ;p

I’ll say: Why don’t I buy the original Levi’s and preserved it until it becomes a retro-vintage collectible thingy haha

Until today, Apple does not have an entity in its company which is equal to Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL).

Then if Apple wants to open its OS standard and opening to all x86 system, it will have identical problem with Solaris x86 and BeOS. Very capable OS, but doomed with hardware compatibility in the chaotic PC world.

But of course, there might be hackers group trying to clone Apple into regular x86 system. Anyway I am now having Darwin in my VM x86 system (because I am too poor to have a SCSI bootdisk)

Wakakaka… don’t worry babe, the soul of the Mac is the Mac OS X itself. :))

Some people maybe unpleasant to find that Mac is no longer exclusive. But we all serve different purpose. What can I say???

Jessie, do not expect too much. We still don’t know yet whether Apple will open its OS X to PC manufacturers or keep it close. At least you can consider to get a next portable from Apple since it can run OS X natively along with MS Windows 😀

Did I mention Linux too :))

    Cheers!

Apple might not OPEN its OS X to any PC mobo, but mostlikely to big manufacturers like HP, Dell, IBM (opss Lenovo) etc. By doing so, Apple will able to control what’s compatible devices that those manufacturers can use.

It’s dull to run OS X on old VGA that not support Quartz, Quartz Extreme or Core Image. That’s something that Apple want to prevent. Also collectible license would be difficult in open market business. But as time goes who knows what coming next.

Steve has not pull all the genies out the bottle yet.

When people talk about Intel, their mind is set to X86 architecture. But with this Apple-Intel alliances, we sure have a question. Apple today uses Power PC processor that is obviously different with X86 architecture. The great thing about having Power PC is the Altivec engine (and off course, the RISC arch.) it surely can boost the overall system performance. Sure, the X86 have the “MMX” but the performance is poor compared with Altivec (i’m talking about efficiency). So the question here is, will Apple use the X86 architecture? or will they build a whole new processor and plug the Altivec engine inside? The main reason of Apple choosing Intel(and not AMD for instance) as their partner, IMHO, is because Intel has a reputation of capability of meeting demand (they sure want to make the Moore Law hold as long as possible 😀 ). We all know how fast it is Intel release a new (faster) processor, and Apple has the problem (with the IBM) about the issue, stuck with the speed for years. It’s like Microsoft want to release Windows XP, but the faster machine that can be installed is stuck on 300 MHz. Sure, it “can be” installed on the system, but hell!! you’ll need 1 minute just to open office applications. Why does Pentium have hotter temperature compared with PPC? it is because Pentium has high clockspeed. Simply saying, it is CISC, so it needs higher clockspeed to achieve the same time to finish a task compared with PPC. Higher clockspeed means higher power supply; means higher power dissipation(loss); and since power loss is oftenly in form of heat, so Pentium is hot!! yeah!! Pentium is Hot ;D This is also the case with the G5 (and maybe G4 too) processor, they’re hot!!
So, in my opinion, Apple will not use the propietary X86 architecture, or if it does, it will use the new technology of transistor (semiconductor) and yes, they may also want plug the altivec core to the processor (i wouldn’t dare to imagine they use MMX to replace Altivec).
I think Apple will not open OSX to other PC manufacturers, as they said, “OSX will not run on computer other than Apple Computer”
Sure, they will build the new logic board, and there will be dozens of hackers to make OSX run on system other than Apple computer, But it will (as always) be closed architecture. The reason? they just wanna safe their ass.

bro, bumped into your blog as i was searching for articles on “Why migrate from filthy windows to shining mac”.

Great posts, however i think i need you to tell me the main reasons to migrate to mac. i have never ever put my hands on a mac but my eyes have been put paralyzed by it’s beautifull curves and design.

would you be kind enough to drop me an email at monyet_duduk@yahoo.com.sg

i’d like to know i am making the right choice in buying an ibook.

    regards,
    Luis

It’s like dream come true, my reunion with Mac OS X will continue (i had it with my Boss Powerbook G4). I hate it when i hace to use FlyakiteOS X,on pirate MS win XP, but it’s the cheapest way to “feel” Mac OS X, beside PearPC of course.

    Answer:
Heat dissipation is not always correspondence to clockspeed only. Netburst architecture (Pentium 4) just plain sux. Other chips (IBM PowerPC G5, Moto/Freescale G4, or even Intel’s own Centrino) do not produce the same heat dissipation as Netburst architechture (Pentium 4). It’s time for Intel to bury Pentium 4 for goodness.

Will not use? Hmm Apple will use standard x86 architecture. Check out Intel mid 2006 roadmap they look good. Yonah (Dual core Centrino) is promising. Apple will definitely hunger for this chip. As for MMX? Have you check SS3 yet? MMX is so 90’s.. Intel latest offering is SS3. SS3 is great solution for vector processing, not as robust as AltiVec tough, but definitely we’ll see what they have to offer next. As my concern now is Centrino not supporting SS3 yet.

What ass they have to safe? Apple is profitable company and amazing in the term of growth over the last 2 years. The only company that rise 600% in 2 years. We don’t know yet what future lies. Stay tune and keep your hope floating.
